A motley crew of revelers — well-tanned men with curly gray hair, 20-something tourists, women with children and grandchildren on their hips — crowded around four long folding tables sagging with food, and the turquoise-trimmed white walls reverberated with the sounds of familiar songs sung in unison.

The party’s hyperactive host, his shiny yellow tie flung rakishly over his left shoulder, stood on a folding chair, held aloft a plastic cup of Stolichnaya vodka and proposed a toast — to what, I wasn’t sure; the words were lost in a jumble of languages I didn’t understand. But then a traditional cry rose up, and I recognized it instantly:

“L’chaim!”

Yes, in sultry, sinful Cancún, I was spending my Friday night at Chabad House, the outreach center for the Lubavitchers, the Orthodox Hasidic Jewish sect. But why had I, a long-lapsed Jew, chosen this Sabbath bacchanal to break my 11-year avoidance of Jewish events?

Two words: free dinner.

O.K., it was more complicated than that. Frankly, Cancún scared me. On the one hand, this overdeveloped hub of Mexico’s so-called Mayan Riviera seemed like a frugal traveler’s dream, and the $500 I carried for the weekend could easily install me in a hostel with a refrigerator full of Jell-o shots, but I’m about a decade past my “Gross Gone Wild!” days. On the other hand, the five-star Cancún experience — represented by resorts like the Ritz-Carlton and Le Meridien, with their beachside cabana restaurants and hoity-toity spas — was well beyond my budget. And while I could surely afford all-inclusive bliss in one of the Riu Hotel chain’s pseudo-neo-Classical monstrosities, that sort of utter mindless ease offends my adventurous soul.

No, I wanted all of the above — sophomoric fun, total relaxation, a taste of luxury — plus the alternative, “real” Cancún, whatever that might be.

Before stumbling upon the all-too-real Chabad House, my search led me first to Puerto Juárez, a speck of a town five minutes north of Cancún’s gritty but lively downtown, and the Villa Playa Blanca, a $45-a-night bed-and-breakfast opened last March by Alejandro (Alex) Gutiérrez, 26, and his 27-year-old friend Horacio Viazcán.

A whitewashed four-story home in a quiet subdevelopment, the Villa Playa Blanca is a study in clean, contemporary design — soft fabrics, fresh flowers, tea lights on the staircase — and precision hospitality. Minutes after I arrived, I was standing on the roof deck when Mabelu Pedraza, the housekeeper-chef-receptionist, brought me a chilled towel and a glass of pineapple juice with a splash of vodka. I sipped my drink and gazed at the glittering Caribbean and the distant ridge of buildings that make up Cancún’s “zona hotelera,” 13 unfortunate miles of beaches, hotels, malls and nightclubs.

Not only was the Villa Playa Blanca cool, but its proprietors, Alex and Horacio, were just the kind of friendly, knowledgeable locals I’m always hoping to hang out with. And within an hour of checking in, we were taking a late lunch at Pozolería Castillo, a busy little restaurant that specializes in pozole, a rich pork-and-hominy soup embellished with chilies and oregano. A big bowl cost 55 pesos, or about $5 at 10.99 pesos to the dollar, and 15 pesos more bought me a lemonade. I had begun to think I’d discovered my own private, perfect Cancún.

After a solo late-afternoon walk on Playa Niños, a family-friendly beach just down the road from Villa Playa Blanca, I was at Chabad House — one of thousands worldwide, from Bangkok to the Brazilian rain forest — and totally out of my depth. As bearded men in white shirts and dark pants prayed and swayed, their tzitzit, or tassels, dangling from their waists, I tried (and failed) to follow along in the bilingual siddur, and comforted myself with the idea that my atrocious Hebrew made me seem almost fluent in Spanish by comparison.

When the praying ended, dinner began, and I relaxed. Over baked salmon, challah, hummus, baba ganoush, and a cucumber salad that, I swear, tasted just like my mom’s, I befriended Yardena Landau, a Spirit Airlines employee who’d moved there from Mexico City; we bonded over a love of travel and wariness of zealots. Actually, my wariness of the true believers around me slowly dissipated, and while I wasn’t about to go kosher — certainly not on the Yucatán peninsula, home of cochinita pibil, the slow-cooked suckling pig — I happily raised my cup of Stoli when Mendel Druk, the 26-year-old rabbi, reminded us all, “You can come to Cancún, and you can still pray in a synagogue!”

Well, l’chaim to that.

The next morning, after devouring my breakfast in bed of coffee, orange juice, toast, yogurt and fruit salad, I went beach-hunting. Still reluctant to confront the zona hotelera, I instead hopped a 35-peso ferry to Isla Mujeres, a five-mile-long island whose Playa Norte had been recommended by Jenny, a veteran Cancún visitor who was staying at my hotel.

Playa Norte was indeed quiet and, as Cancún area beaches go, unpopulated. I settled into a lounge chair between a pair of small piers and waited for the inevitable: a waiter demanding I buy an overpriced cocktail to secure my seat. He never came. For hours I had a free, umbrella-shaded spot next to the bathtub-warm azure water. In fact, I soon began to crave a waiter. I was getting hungry. I wound up having to — horror of horrors — walk across the warm sand to order some fish tacos and a Dos Equis (75 pesos total).

By midafternoon, I caught the ferry back to Puerto Juárez, jumped in my car and drove to Cancún’s inland downtown area and the Xbalamqué Hotel, whose clean, low-key spa is known not only for its traditional Mayan and Nahuatl treatments but also for its affordability. Nothing on the menu, from sports massage to mud, algae and chocolate baths, cost more than 550 pesos, a small fraction of the prices at the Ritz-Carlton.

Still, I picked the cheapest option: 30 minutes in the temazcal, a Nahuatl steam bath, for 120 pesos. Essentially a sauna, the temazcal was a small, brick-lined room illuminated by a single yellow filament bulb, the steam perfumed with mint that tingled my lips as I lay on a bench. When I emerged, every toxin had drained away, and my skin glowed.

7 Reasons to Visit Cancun Mexico

Cancun has transformed from a deserted strip of sand to a world class destination for sun weary travelers in just 30 years. The 17 KM long hotel zone has resorts to fit any budget or lifestyle. There are so many attractions in and around Cancun that it is no wonder so many people choose to visit this jewel in Mexico?s crown. There are 7 great reasons why you should visit Cancun

1. The Beaches - The first reason to visit Cancun is the beaches. White coral sand that is so fine you will be picking out of your belly button for weeks after you return home.

There is a 17 km long silver, white beach that is fully open and accessible to the public. Along the east coast the surf rolls in from the Caribbean Sea and creates a fun playground for those looking to body surf the day away. Along the north coast the beaches are sheltered from the waves and are calm, perfect for small children or those looking for less wave action.

2. The Food - Looking for dinner in the hotel zone is an experience in itself. There are restaurants for almost any type of palette; Mexican, Italian, Continental cuisine plus a wide selection of fast food and health conscience choices.

The interesting thing about walking through the hotel zone is that you quickly realize the restaurants are in stiff competition for your business. Restaurants hire staff to come out to you on the street with a menu and offer you the most amazing food creations. All restaurants have sample meals on display outside vying to get you to come in. It often works, seeing a lobster dinner and the likes as you walk past makes it hard not be drawn inside.

3. The Shopping - Kukulkan Plaza is the show piece of Cancun's shopping experience. With over 60,000 square meter of space and 250 shops there is no doubt that you will find exactly what you are looking for. There are many other shops and boutiques that offer everything from jewelry to authentic Mexican blankets and crafts.

One of the best shopping experiences is the street vendors. Gathering every afternoon and evening shoppers can find fabulous art work and hand made jewelry made by local artisan.

4. The Resorts - The entire length of Cancun, all 17 KM, is lined with mega resorts that offer travelers absolutely everything you could want or imagine. Spa, restaurants, recreation, you name it and there is a resort that provides it. With an all inclusive package you will hardly need to leave the resort for the duration of your holiday.

5. The Ruins - Cancun is surrounded by Mayan temples and ruins that are as old as 2000 years. The most popular are Chichen Itza and Tulum with tours visiting both locations daily. Bring lots of film (memory card), sun screen and a bunch of money for water, snacks and souvenirs.

6. The People - The locals in Cancun are wonderful. We have not gone to Cancun yet where we weren't inspired by the kindness and generosity of the locals.

  7. The Ocean - It is hard to top the Caribbean. The water is as warm as a bath and a deep turquoise color. For the divers out there nearby Cozumel is rated one of the top diving sites in the world. With a large Marine park divers can dive to majestic coral walls and underwater pinnacles. On this island, you will find few phones, cars, and computers but a great variety of flamingoes, seashells, and all kinds of birds and dolphins in their natural habitat. Before the Spanish conquest, Mayans inhabited Holbox. Over the years, while Holbox was prospering from its coconut plantations, an important fishing industry developed due to the richness of the surrounding sea.

Holbox Island offers several miles of unspoiled beaches, full of seashells and lush mangrove vegetation. The seawaters change tone, going from the turquoise blue of the Caribbean, to the emerald blue of the Gulf of Mexico. All these conditions make Holbox a perfect habitat for abundant and exotic wildlife. Here you can amuse yourself watching dolphins jumping out of the water or flamingoes moving elegantly with a magical sunset as the background.

During your time in Holbox, you can stay in charming "casitas," small houses usually built of wood with thatched roofs. Most Holbox people sleep in hammocks that are knitted by local women; you can buy one to take home with you. Many souvenir shops also offer other crafts and accessories handmade by local people.

To get to Holbox Island, you have to board the public ferry from Chiquila.Holbox is located in the northeast corner of the Yucatan Peninsula, just where the Mexican Caribbean starts in Cabo Catoche. The island is 25 miles long and its width varies from less than 1/2 to over a mile wide, making a total area of 25 square miles.

Holbox in Mayan means "black hole," named after the tiny lagoon in the southern area of the island. The natural attractions make Holbox an excellent destination, perfect for ecotourism, which contributes to local people's income. The government has declared this island a protected area, to ensure the survival of the extraordinary local wildlife in future generations.

Holbox cuisine consists mainly of fresh and healthy seafood obtained directly from local fishermen. You can also try traditional "ceviche" and typical fish "empanadas." In addition, you will find fresh and exotic fruits such as papayas, mangoes, and pineapples. east coast has long, virgin, white-sand beaches and a strong surf where, when swimming is not recommended, the views are dramatic. San Gervasio is an archaeological site in the center of the island where a temple is dedicated to Ixchel. There are frequent tours departing from downtown.

Snorkeling is a popular activity as well. For beginners, there is no need to swim a great distance nor take boats to admire the reefs. Opportunities for snorkeling are awesome even at your hotel's beach.

San Miguel de Cozumel, the only town on the island, has all the charm of the Mexican Caribbean. During its golden years, Chichen Itza was the most important political, economic and religious center for the Mayan civilization.

Although, unlike most of the existing archaeological sites nowadays, it lacks the intense colored pigments the Mayans used to decorate their temples, markets and ball courts, Chichen Itza continues to impress national and foreign travelers with its architectonic beauty. Another fascinating facet of the Mayans is the perfect harmony they had with nature, reflected through the special arrangement of the buildings in the city, built to coincide with significant astronomical phenomena.
Chichen Itza was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, after a worldwide voting via the internet. UNESCO has considered the archeological city as a World Heritage Site since 1988. These titles are well deserved by Chichen Itza, since it is only through the understanding of the rituals held there and the engravings on buildings throughout the city that we can fully comprehend the ancient wisdom the Mayans, some of which is still relevant today!

Nowadays, the part of Chichen Itza open to the public consists of 17 constructions, many of which have partially been restored or reconstructed, using the same materials as the Maya. There are also two cenotes definitely worth visiting, which are natural water wells formed by rainwater filtered through the limestone walls.

Once In the center of the archaeological site, visitors immediately focus their attention on the imposing beauty and impressive size of the Temple of Kukulcan, also known as ''El Castillo'' (The Castle), for it is one of the highest buildings constructed by the Mayans. The temples four sides each has a stairway running up it and the base of the north side is watched over by two gigantic snake heads, representing the plumed serpent or god Kukulcan.

There's another part of Chichen Itza not yet open to visitors known as ''Chichen Viejo'' (Old Chichen). This part of the site has 13 more structures of varying dimensions and two large plazas. Once this area is ready for tourists, visitors may be able to wander through the almost 19 square miles that this city covered in its heyday.

According to archeologists, in its initial stages Chichen Itza was no more than a small town formed by small huts of wood and straw built around the Xtoloc cenote, and it was not until around 325 A.D. that Chichen Itza started acquiring the city-like shape, it still keeps, with the construction of the now world-famous huge stone temples started.

Urban planning was a little bit messy and erratic at first, although later great care was taken to plan the city and leave more space among the buildings and temples by making causeways called sacbe or sacbeob in plural, meaning 'white ways', which also joined the city with other towns. The causeways were paved with quicklime and they were slightly elevated above ground. All of the causeways still exist today and some have even been turned into modern day highways.

It is believed that by 1000 A.D. war broke out in the Mayan kingdoms causing the fall of Chichen Itza. Evidence gathered on site shows that the thatched and wooden roofs on top of some of the temples such as the Temple of the Warriors and the Market were burned down. Chichen Itza's fall is also directly related to the rise of Mayapan in Southern Yucatan, as the new political and economic center of the Mayan World. Nevertheless, there is evidence that up to the 16th century, Chichen Itza remained a sacred center, where Mayans carried out pilgrimages and ceremonies to the temple of Kukulcan.

Chichen Itza is an enigmatic place that holds invaluable mysteries and secrets yet to be uncovered of the many achievements reached by the Mayans. It has been proven that each and every temple in the city was built in accordance with the position of the stars and planets. The Castle, for instance, registers the equinoxes (when day and night last the same length) and the summer solstice (when the sun reaches its peak over the Tropic of Cancer). Another similar case is the Snail or Observatory that registers the cycles of the moon, which together with the sun's positioning are important indicators of the planting and harvest seasons.

You can't miss the opportunity to visit this magical place, since it has recently been voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Chichen Itza comprises exuberant vegetation, magnificent architectural treasures, and invaluable knowledge of astronomy, mathematics and even acoustics. It is one of the most important indigenous settlements of all the civilizations in the Americas and one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Mexico. It is a gift to the world that must be preserved for future generations and the invaluable knowledge discovered should be disseminated throughout the world.

Chetumal Mexico

A rich historical past inherited from their Mayan ancestors and array of leisure activities await you in Chetumal. Enjoy the impressive, turquoise and jade hues of the bay, the nice, gentle breeze that blows up and down the streets, the sweet songs of the migratory birds, and the hospitality of the locals that will be more than glad to share a little of their joy for life through their traditions and celebrations.

Those not familiar with Chetumal, might think that it is just a border town, or at best the doorway to Mexico or to Central America. Even travelers dazzled by the splendor of the world- class resorts of northern Quintana Roo, acknowledge the invaluable wealth of this tropical paradise, home to the second longest reef barrier of the world, but then again, Chetumal is much more than that.

Chetumal is like a canvass on which a master painter has captured the greenness of the rain forest, the whiteness of the beaches, visited only by the local fishermen, the brightness of the colors of the wildlife, and the distinct architecture of the wooden houses with their red, slanted, roofs in the style of 'Old Chetumal'.

It is said that Chetumal was the birthplace of the first mestizo in America. When the Spanish soldier Gonzalo Guerrero and the Mayan princess Zazil Ha fulfilled their love for each other and conceived their first born. A fact that adds an air of mysticism to the already rich, historical legacy of this town.

The War of Castes, an ethnic conflict that broke out between the Mayan Indians and the white European settlers of the Yucatan Peninsula, would forever change the fate of the then, peaceful and unexplored land of Chetumal. Due to the constant trafficking of arms between Belize and the insurgent rebels in 1898, the Federal Government sent Othon P. Blanco, Second- Lieutenant of the Army, to establish a customs post that later became the town of Payo Obispo. The hope, the expectations, and the hard work of those first men and women helped set the foundations for what eventually would come to be Chetumal.

In the following years, being a border town enabled Chetumal to base part of its economic progress on the trade of goods between Mexico and Central America and on the exploitation of its natural resources such as, the production of natural gum resin from the gum tree, as well as timber of the many tropical trees which were in great demand abroad, for the making of fine furniture.

Despite the political conflicts going on locally and nationally and the adverse, climatic conditions, Chetumal continued its economic and social growth non-stop until 1955, when Hurricane Janet struck the area. Most of the original, wooden houses were destroyed and the area was devastated, forcing the population to move away temporarily to gather resources and eventually rebuild their town.

From the 1960's and 1970's on, Chetumal started to look as it does today, with its parks and town squares, its historical monuments and landmarks, modern and efficient roads and highways, and many other services, like hospitals, schools, nightclubs, malls. It was just a small sand barrier some 35 years ago when the plan began to develop it into the vacation haven of the 21st century. Today, Cancun consists of a medium-sized coastal city and a long, thin island connected to the mainland through bridges at its north and south ends. It features world-class resorts, hotels, clubs, and malls. It offers something for everyone, from an all-day fun party beach to an isolated, tranquil island.

Here you'll find everything, from ultra chic to funky laidback, from R&B to techno, from tacos and cheeseburgers to fancy, mainstream standards. All tastes are welcomed and catered to in this paradise. No wonder this is Mexico's most popular resort.

Cancun's beaches

The new, great, and gorgeous beaches of white sand caressed by warm, turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea stand out as the hottest spots in town, both literally and figuratively. It's impossible not to enjoy them so don't even try. Put on your bikini or swimsuit, it's time for fun under the sun!
Topless bathing is an activity that is quietly accepted in Cancun and many of the surrounding areas along the Mayan Rivera. The atmosphere becomes more family-friendly as all the people who make this paradise work live here. They are the target market and the ambience not only becomes Latin, but prices go down significantly. Your wallet will appreciate very much your visit to downtown, as the money it contains will certainly go farther there during your Cancun vacation.

Oasis Viva Beach

Oasis Viva Beach is located in the center of the Hotel Zone, within easy walking distance of the Convention Center of Cancun, shopping, bars and restaurants. Slivers of sunlight reflect off the white mosquito netting surrounding my bed, and there is a quiet and peaceful stillness in the air. Something has shifted internally for me and the dark blanket of fear has finally lifted. I can easily sleep another several hours and the idea is tempting, but my eagerness to explore these new surroundings in the light of day propels me from bed and into my khaki shorts and brand new tevas. I remember that breakfast is only served until 9AM, so I run towards the open air restaurant where I find Jesse smiling brightly, her ebony eyes radiating warmth and love. Jesse is in charge of the restaurant here. She is of Jamaican descent, born and raised in a small town near Limon on the southern Caribbean coast.

There is something magnetic about Jesse; she has a rare gift of genuine warmth that immediately draws people into her spiritual embrace. Jesse speaks English, Patwa, fluent Spanish and some conversational French. Her bright smile and kind demeanor are contagious. A full breakfast buffet at the Almonds and Corals resort includes coffee, orange juice, eggs, fresh fruit, gallo pinto, , toast, bacon and ham. To my surprise and delight, breakfast and dinner are included at Almonds and Corals along with a special evening cocktail. The service is superb and the food is satisfying and plentiful.

After breakfast I settle myself into one of the plush green sofas in the open air restaurant and fire up my laptop computer to begin my daily writing. What an incredible privilege it is to write surrounded by such natural splendor in the dense, moist rainforest and soothing sounds of the jungle. My creative juices flow easily here and my heart swells with joy and gratitude. Joy at the prospect of nearly five weeks to focus on nothing but my two greatest passions- travel and writing; gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a special gift of freedom and adventure.

Unfortunately, my bliss is only short lived on this first day in Costa Rica. It seems I have forgotten two important travel lessons. First, when traveling through a foreign country, things rarely proceed as planned. Second, when visiting a remote jungle location in a third world country, the concept of time (or lack thereof) differs considerably. Simple tasks that you might expect to perform in several minutes or less, like placing a telephone call or sending an email, can in fact require a full day or longer to perform, due to a myriad of reasons such as weak telephone signals, language barriers and inexplicable power outages.

The things I love the most about such an exotic and remote destination are the very same things I detest. Of course, I do not expect to travel to the same beat here, but the logistical obstacles I face on this first day seemed to border on the absurd, resulting in part from my own lack of careful logistical planning and in part due to events outside my realm of control.

I am traveling through this country on a writing mission. My goal is to share the spiritual lessons of my journey with as many folks as possible; through my Mercury columns, website blog, and the book I intend to write. I arrived here with a full arsenal of modern technology including a new laptop computer, Skype capability, blue tooth, and digital camera. I planned to post a daily blog to my website depicting my travel adventures, accompanied by striking photography. I intended to maintain meticulous control over this project.

Suffice to say, I forgot to research whether Almonds and Corals offers Wi-Fi access or cell phone signals (negative on both counts) and I thought the hotel receptionist was just being gracious by allowing me unlimited internet access via the single computer located behind the reception desk. When I received la cuenta (the bill) for my computer time and my face conveyed a mixture of shock and disbelief, the receptionist smiled and pointed to the tiny sign hanging above her desk. This was the sign that I somehow missed, the one that outlined the charges for internet access. Strike one for the ignorant gringo, I thought to myself, and reached for my rapidly shrinking wallet. Travel lesson#1: If you plan to travel to a remote jungle location on a writing assignment, carefully research Wi-Fi capability.

The next dilemma unfolds when I attempt to place a telephone call to the states and the international operator informs me that my visa debit card is rejected. Strike two for the ignorant gringo. The hotel telephone system only accepts credit cards for placing international calls, even to toll free numbers like Wachovia customer service. When I attempt to place a collect call to my bank from my hotel room, the operator informs me in broken English that I cannot place a collect call to a toll free number. I return to the reception desk and request permission to use the computer to search for a regular contact number for my bank. The dial-up connection at the hotel operates at snails pace but I finally locate the number and attempt to place a collect call to my bank from the phone at the reception desk. Again, I am informed by the operator in broken English that I must use a credit card. Travel Lesson #2: Notify bank prior to leaving the country in order to prevent a security block on your debit card.

I inquire at the reception desk about purchasing an international calling card with pre-paid minutes. I am informed that the hotel does not sell international calling cards. The nearest option is the town of Puerto Viejo, located 15 minutes from the hotel. I do not have a car, and I am too stubborn to take a taxi to the neighboring town to purchase an international calling card. Surely there must be an easier way to notify my bank that it is in fact me attempting to use the card in Central America, and not a Columbian drug lord. I embark on a frantic search for a person with a cell phone. With no good results, I return to the reception area to inquire about how I might reach a toll free number in the United States. The receptionist stares at me blankly. "Toll free number," I repeat in broken Spanish. "Uno, ocho, zero, zero?" I continue, praying for a glimmer of recognition.

Now growing increasingly exasperated, I decide to switch gears and inquire about the possibility of borrowing a cell phone from a hotel staff member. "Hay una persona aqui con un telefono cellular?" I inquire, in a pleading tone. The polite young receptionist replies in rapid fire Spanish and the only phrase I manage to translate is mucho arboles; in English this translates to many trees, and necesitas caminar el calle. Translation: Due to the many trees surrounding the hotel, you need to walk to the street to access a cell phone signal. Strike three for the ignorant gringo. This is wonderful in theory, particularly for honeymooners in love but not so much for the solitary travel writer. Travel Lesson #3: If you plan to travel to a remote jungle location on a writing assignment, anticipate absence of cell phone signal.

Now it is close to 4PM, and being so close to the equator I am aware that I have a little over an hour remaining before dusk. I locate my new friends Chantal and Rachel, a delightful mother/daughter duo from France. I am relieved to learn that Chantal and Rachel have a cell phone. Chantal is preparing to embark on a zip line excursion, and Rachel is happy to accompany me on a ten minute walk to el calle, far enough away from los arboles, to (hopefully) obtain a cell phone signal.

Just as we are preparing to leave Rachel's foot is attacked by fire ants and I must return to my room to retrieve my emergency supply of Benadryl. Ah, the joy of life in the jungle. PURA VIDA!!!! I reflect longingly on my peaceful morning relaxing in the open air restaurant, gazing out at the jungle as I sip my delicious Costa Rican coffee. Several minutes later, Rachel and I head towards the main street. On the way we encounter a young boy holding a very large rodent in one hand and a marijuana cigarette in the other. Chantal yells down to us from somewhere high above the treetops. Seconds later she goes careening above our heads, suspended in mid-air strapped inside a harness, releasing a high pitched shriek in the process. I'm not in Kansas anymore, I think to myself, and then burst into a fit of hysterical laughter.

We arrive at the main street and Rachel's phone chirps intermittently, alerting us to a dying battery. Rachel holds her phone up towards the sky and gazes at me apologetically, as there is still no signal and the battery is about to die. Dusk is rapidly descending upon us and the mosquitoes are coming out in full force. Feeling defeated, I return to the hotel and head towards my room in need of a hot shower. Here I encounter an American woman traveling with her teenage son. They are painfully bored at the hotel, and they cannot imagine spending another day in the midst of a rainforest jungle with little to amuse them aside from a group of howler monkeys. They are headed back to San Jose, and upon listening to my story, she nods sympathetically and hands me her pre-paid international calling card.

I race back to my room feeling as if I were just handed the Olympic medal for endurance. I read the tiny digits on the back of the card and follow the instructions which indicate to first dial 199, and then enter the special code number. It takes me approximately 45 seconds to discover that the telephone in my room does not accept international calling cards, only personal credit cards. I am beyond incensed as I return to the reception desk to inquire about the nearest phone that will accept my international pre-paid calling card. The receptionist points to a dilapidated looking pay phone hiding behind a patch of foliage in the hotel parking lot. I proceed to the phone and place my hand on the rusty receiver, when I notice swarms of fire ants taking up residence beneath my feet. Each ant appears to be carrying a tiny green object on its back. Morbidly amused, I try to decipher whether the tiny object belongs to the animal, mineral or plant family. Wachovia sends me into an automated system where I am placed on hold, classical music blaring in my ear. I blurt out a string of obscenities as I dance the fire ant jig, alternating from one foot to the other as the cluster of ants approach my teva clad feet.

I recall my lesson about surrender from the prior night. My first night in Manzanillo I lay alone in the darkness, enveloped in blackness deeper than Jesse's soulful eyes. I could barely detect the faint outline of the mosquito netting billowing wildly around me in the balmy breeze as I listened to the sound of the driving tropical rain beating against the thatched roof of my bungalow tent and howler monkeys calling out in the distance. Lying there on the brink of terror, I made a choice to surrender to the inevitable. Beyond the fear, I found a new appreciation for the incredible laws of nature and the harmonious balance of the jungle- a three dimensional illustration of the circle of life. Today, as I struggle to re-gain my sense of control over the world of doing, I nearly forget this valuable lesson.

Standing there pressing the rusty receiver against my ear, I recall the phrase Hakuna Matata from the Lion King, which in essence, means no worries. A fire ant reaches my big toe. I find myself wondering why it is so important for me to reach my bank today anyway. I have cash in my wallet, I am not faced with imminent danger, I am safe and I am not starving. I reflect on the phrase Hakuna Matata. I remember the jungle and the circle of life. I take a deep breath. This is to be my mantra here in Costa Rica, as I travel alone through the ring of fire- Hakuna Makata; no worries. I guess I have a lot more to learn about the gift of surrender.

Last night as I lay alone in the darkness listening to the beat of the rain and the eerie sound of howler monkeys calling out in the distance, I experienced my introductory lesson on fear surfing. Fear surfing is my new term for pushing through the fear and looking beyond, to discover what lies on the other side. I return to my room for a hot shower and head straight for the open air restaurant, where I prepare to spend my second night in the jungle.

Get Off The Beaten Path And Take A Mexico Fishing Vacation

By Gregg Hall
If you have never been to Mexico for a fishing trip you are missing a treat. With the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez on the west and the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean on the east, Mexico offers something for almost every type of fisherman, unless you are a lover of ice fishing! Mexico offers some of the best fishing in the world and has some interesting areas to explore as well.
The latest “secret” spot of globe trotting anglers is the Pacific coastal town of Huatulco in the area called the Oaxacan coast. This area is more off the beaten path and is not a tourist trap like many other areas of Mexico such as Cancun and Cozumel. If you are like most anglers, myself included, you are looking for a place to get away from it all and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. Huatulco offers exactly that with clear turquoise waters loaded with pelagic game fish such as Sailfish.

Huatulco is kind of in between the categories of primitive and luxury with nice hotels and restaurants, but nothing pretentious. The local natives are very friendly to tourists unlike a lot of areas that you may travel to.

As far as the fishing goes, Huatulco is an incredible fishing ground for sailfish and marlin. We focused on fishing for sailfish the least time I was there and in seven days of fishing we saw probably a dozen or so world record class fish and of those we caught and released four and landed two and that’s not even mentioning the fact that overall we raised over a hundred fish while trolling! We even got the attention of a couple of large blue marlin but couldn’t get them to take a bait.

Another hot spot on Mexico’s west coast is Cabo San Lucas, the destination of many Hollywood movie stars. This area which is located on the Baja Peninsula is the quintessential fishing vacation for all sport fishermen and in particular those seeking the elusive Marlin as the waters off of Cabo are known as the Marlin Capital of the World.

The Sea of Cortez which was created by an enormous earthquake millions of years ago effectively works as a huge fish trap to the large pelagic species that run the Pacific Ocean. You will see hundreds of boats chasing after the marlin with craft of every size from the local’s small pangas to luxurious motor yachts from California and all over the world. If you are looking for a great fishing trip Cabo San Lucas will not disappoint you.

Top 10 Mexican Vacation Questions

           by Bookit.com Staff
Is Traveling to Mexico Safe?
Yes. Overall Mexico is considered very safe, and one should feel comfortable traveling to any part of this extensively diverse and interesting country. Popular destinations such as Cancun and Cozumel have low crime rates and are sensitive to security issues for visitors. That said, act just as you would at home, locking doors and windows, putting valuables away and not bringing unnecessary attention to yourself. If you use your common sense and take the same precautions you would at home, then you will enjoy your Mexican vacation, like the millions of visitors that never have a problem.

Do I Need a Passport to Travel to Mexico?
Effective January 23rd, 2007, citizens of the U.S. or Canada are required to present a valid passport to enter Mexico by air.
Effective January 31st, 2008, if you are traveling to Mexico by land or sea, you will be required to present a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. Beginning summer 2008, (on a date yet to be determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative), a valid passport will be required when traveling to Mexico by land, air, or sea.
A valid passport is the best form of identification and some airlines already require a passport for travel to Mexico. If you don’t have a passport, a certified birth certificate and a picture ID such as drivers’ license may also work depending on which airline you wish to use.

The United States government also suggests its citizens register travel outside of the country with the U.S. State Department.

Prior to entering Mexico, visitors must fill out two forms; a migratory form and a customs form. These will usually be supplied by airline staff before your flight arrives, or you can obtain a copy from the nearest Mexican embassy or consulate in your home country. If you are a single parent, parent traveling alone with children, or parents with children bearing a different last name, you will be required to provide a signed, notarized letter from the legal parent or guardian consenting to the child leaving your home country.

Do I Need to Bring Money or Credit Cards on My Mexican Vacation?
You will no doubt want to have some spending money while traveling in order to go to a restaurant, take in a tour or shop for that special gift, as well as tipping. Pesos is the currency of Mexico and is accepted everywhere. Although the currency rate is constantly changing, the generally accepted rate is 10 pesos to a U.S. dollar. The sign for pesos is also "$",so if your bill seems unreasonably high, it is most likely being quoted in pesos.

U.S. dollars are accepted at many businesses. In fact, there are some businesses that quote their prices in US dollars. Canadian dollars, Euros and British Pounds are accepted at most money exchange booths and many of the banks, but not at many businesses. Traveler's checks are rarely accepted by businesses but will be taken at most banks and money exchange booths, as well as most hotel front desks. Some places will require a passport to exchange them.

There are ATM machines across Mexico where you can use your bank debit card to receive pesos. The ATM’s are handy because you don’t have to bring as much cash and they usually have the best exchange rates. Note that ATM receipts are in pesos, not dollars. It is not very common for businesses to have point-of-sale equipment for you to pay with a Bank Debit Card. As for credit cards, the larger businesses that cater to tourists are more likely to accept your card than the smaller ones. Plan to bring as much cash as you feel comfortable carrying, then offset this with either your credit card, bank debit card or travelers checks.

Do I Need to Learn Spanish to Travel to Mexico?
No. English is spoken quite extensively throughout most Mexican tourist destinations. However, do not expect everyone to speak fluent English or to understand you, especially in the smaller stores and restaurants. It is recommended that you pick up a small Spanish phrase book before leaving home. You will have some fun learning a few words and win the respect of the locals no matter how limited your vocabulary or poor your pronunciation. If you make the effort to speak some limited phrases, the locals will be more than glad to help you with words that you don't know.

Is It Safe to Drink the Water in Mexico?
Large resorts and hotels all along the Riviera Maya and the Pacific Coast resort areas advertise purified water. Most resorts do have their own water purification systems in the hotels. Many people who drink tap water at their hotel have no problems, but to play it safe use bottled water. Ice at resorts and hotels is normally purchased from bottled water companies, so go ahead and have that margarita. Most restaurants, seeking to rid themselves of bad reputations, also use bottled water for cooking and ice. In many restaurants in Mexico, you will see hand washing stations. Use them, as it is a Mexican custom to wash your hands before a meal.

What Does "All Inclusive" Mean?
All Inclusive Resorts offer travelers a single priced vacation that includes the room, meals, beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), entertainment, sports activities, tours and even taxes and gratuities. There are no hidden costs, so you don't have to budget once you get there. It's economical, and makes for a worry-free vacation. There are All Inclusive resorts tailored to families, honeymooners and adults only. The bottom line is that All Inclusive hotels and resorts offer tremendous value to consumers who want carefree luxury, but also want to know at what cost.

What About Tipping?
Most workers in the Mexican service industry rely heavily on tips for their livelihood. Tipping insures proper service and is expected from restaurant servers, baggage handlers and housecleaning. As in the United States, tipping for restaurant servers should be between 10-20% of the total bill depending on quality of service and experience. Baggage handlers typically receive $1-$2 per bag or more depending on the number of bags and time spent. Hotel and resort housekeepers generally receive between $1 -$2 for each day of service. If you stay in an All-Inclusive resort, the tips are included in your package, although a little extra is always appreciated.

What Should I Bring with Me on My Mexico Vacation?
Half of what you think you need. The weather is most often warm, and the dress is casual even at the best restaurants. You might want one light pair of pants and a light sweater or sweat shirt just in case it is cool in the evening. Likely, you will purchase a nice sun dress, or a few t-shirts and some souvenirs while you are here so leave room in your suitcase, or pack an empty duffel bag to take along.

Don’t forget the sunscreen. Make sure to bring a bio-degradable type to help preserve the coral, aquatic life and to keep the swimming pool clean and clear. You should have a hat to protect your head, sunglasses, a good book, your camera and some insect repellant, the non-aerosol kind with DEET. All of these items are available locally if you forget them or don’t want to carry them with you. You should also bring your prescription medicines and a copy of your prescriptions with your important papers.

If you are going to visit the ruins along the Riviera Maya, comfortable walking shoes are important, and a day-pack is nice to have along to carry water and a snack. Water shoes are a good idea as some of the beaches may have coral outcrops.

It is a good idea to have a list of all your credit/debit cards, emergency health care card, and the contact numbers listed, should you lose one. Include a copy of passports and other important documents. You can leave this information with someone at home that you know you will be able to reach in case of an emergency, or carry a copy with you in a safe place different than your cards. Many larger hotels have in-room safes to store important documents and other valuables.

Will I Have Cell Phone Coverage and Internet Access in Mexico?
Mobile cell phone coverage is pretty good in the entire Riviera Maya, as well as the Pacific Coast. Some U.S. and Canadian cell phone providers have agreements with the two Mexican mobile phone companies to provide service to their customers. However, in most cases you must contact your service provider at home before leaving to have this feature activated on your cell phone. Cell phones are also available to rent at the airport or your hotel concierge can help you find one. Most hotels offer internet access, however some hotels will require you to buy access in 30 minute minimum increments. There are many internet cafes throughout Mexico. Keep in mind that you are in Mexico, so many of the keyboards will contain Spanish characters even though the letters are the same. The road begins on Kilometer 20 of the Las Americas Highway, crossing Monte Plata, Bayaguana and Los Haitises, reaching Maria Trinidad Sanchez Province, while connecting various counties in these areas.

The highway has three toll plazas with an approximate toll cost of $10 USD (350 Dominican Pesos), depending on the type of your vehicle, and services offered include road rangers, police, customer service centers, snacks, restrooms and telephone.
The great news for visitors to the Dominican Republic is that the design of the road saves over three hours of travel time! The approximate driving time between Santo Domingo and Samana is now just an hour and a half.
So what are you waiting for? It's easier than ever to visit the Dominican Republic, with numerous non stop flights from many U.S gateway cities, affordable all-inclusive resorts in spectacular beachfront settings, and a culture and vibe all of its own! There was a feeling of sheer exhilaration at the prospect of a quiet break from the monotony of our urban existence. The combination of Dasara holidays and a weekend gave us an opportunity to undertake our long awaited holiday amidst the 12-15th century ruins of Hampi - the globally renowned heritage holiday destination sited 355 km from Bangalore.

We were team of five hardcore adventurers, campers and heritage admirers. Our team comprised of Kishore Patwardhan, Shiva Kumar, Sree Krishna, Mahesh V and myself. Fully fired up with anticipation we embarked upon our sojourn with an aim trek among the rocks and cliffs of Hampi, the headquarters of the Vijayanagar empire during the 13-15 centuries.

Hampi - a world heritage site

Hampi is a world famous heritage tourism destination and one of the 16 Unesco recognised World Heritage Sites in the country. Once home to a cultural efflorescence involving sculptors, musicians, artists, and artisans who worked together to translate the lofty vision of the Vijayanagar princes into enduring monuments, Hampi is currently an underdeveloped village which doesn't even have a proper tar road. The ruins sprawl over an area of 26 sq. km and are evocative of ancient Hindu kings' pomp and glory. The opulent palaces, temples and massive fortifications are built with such ingenuity that they blend naturally with their surrounding rock formations, and appear as though they have just grown out of them.

Sited on the banks of the graceful Tungabhadra, amidst massive boulders and craggy hills, Hampi was the capital of the ancient Vijayanagar empire which controlled the Deccan for over 200 years from 1336-1565 AD, and reached its zenith during the reign of Krishnadevaraya, its most famous emperor. Following the death of Krishnadevaraya in 1529 AD the neighbouring Muslim Bahamani rulers coalesced and attacked Hampi. The invading armies ran amok in the town, destroying its beautiful temples and monuments left the once grand city in ruins.

Present day Hampi is divided into four distinct sectors - Venkatapura to the northeast, Hampi towards the northwest, Kodirampura to the south and Kamalapura to the southeast. On the opposite bank of the river is Anegondi, the old capital of the Vijayanagar empire which hosts a massive fort and other monuments. Several imposing monuments are in various stages of ruin and under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) - a Central government body mandated to protect and maintain all historical sites in the country. Though the ASI has commenced restoration and protection of the site, its efforts don't seem enough. Severely understaffed, it is unable to prevent insensitive tourists from littering and vandalising the monuments already crumbling under the pressure of the elements.

Thus far the ASI has identified and restored about 121 major monuments in Hampi and has installed explanatory signboards and information plates in front of each one of them. Easy to read, digitally printed maps have also been placed in strategic locations amidst the ruins to help tourists find their way to monuments of their choice. ASI trained guides are available to show visitors around monuments (guide fees: Rs.150-500 per day). For those who would rather wander in the ruins on their own, vehicles are available for hire: bicycles (Rs.100-200 per day) and motorbikes (Rs.300-500 per day excluding fuel). Autorickshaws driven by self-styled local guides are also an option.

Day 1 - Drive to Hampi

The 355 km journey from Bangalore to Hampi situated in the Bellary district of Karnataka began on October 12 at 8.15 pm. The first 25 km out of the garden city was a tortuous jostle through traffic-clogged streets. The next leg, a stretch of about 200 km on the NH-4 (National Highway-4) upto the famous fort-city of Chitradurga was fast and smooth on the new toll highway (Rs.10 per trip per car) built as part of the Golden Quadrilateral project. The remaining 120 km stretch on potholed National highway-13 which links Hampi via Hospet with Chitradurga was a bumpy and slow ride, we finally reached Hampi at about 4 a.m.

Day 2 - Temples tour in Hampi's main bazaar area

Having reached at an unearthly hour (4 a.m), we decided to pitch a tent and camp out amidst the mountains on the manicured lawns of the Hampi Vidyaranya Math - a religious institution which administers the Virupaksha temple for our much deserved siesta. The local administration collects an entry fee from all vehicles entering Hampi (Rs.30 for cars, Rs.45 for buses and Rs.5 for two wheelers).

After a short nap and a refreshing swim in the Tungabhadra, we set out to explore Hampi and its heritage monuments. The first stop was the Virupaksha temple in the main bazaar area, Hampi's largest operational temple complex. The massive mahadwara(main entrance) leads into a vast open courtyard of the beautiful stone temple supported by intricately carved pillars and friezes. Perhaps the most striking feature of this 15th century temple is a small dark cubicle behind the sanctum sanctorum, where an inverted shadow of the imposing rajagopuram (entrance cupola) is reflected on the wall opposite - evidence that the pinhole camera technique, and the properties of refraction and dispersion of light were perfected and practised in India well before they became known in the western world. The tallest structure in the ancient town, rajagopuram of the Virupaksha temple is clearly visible from as far as Kamalapuram about 5 km away.

After marvelling at the Virupaksha temple, we climbed the adjacent Ratnakuta hill strewn with several small abandoned temples. Contiguous to Ratnakuta is the Hemakuta hill, scattered with temples and large dolmens. Conspicuous among the buildings atop the Hemakuta hill is Sasivekalu (mustard seed) Ganesha, a 12 ft tall monolithic image of the elephant god enshrined in an open pillared pavilion. Consecrated in 1506, the statue depicts four-armed lord Ganesha seated in the ardha padmasana yogic. Another monolithic idol the 18 ft Kadalekalu (Bengal gram) Ganesha also enshrined on the Hemakuta hill is installed in a fine dolmen supported by attractively carved pillars and friezes depicting gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon.

With the sun beating down mercilessly, we took a lunch break and rested in the cool shade of the ruins. Refreshed we traversed a rough footpath to the sprawling Achyutaraya temple about 500 metres from the main bazaar. The temple has some of the most decorative carvings found in the ruins and was built by Salakaraju Tirumaladeva, chief officer of king Achyutaraya, predecessor of Krishandevaraya. A towering gopuram at the entrance leads into the temple's carved halls and sub shrines. An important shrine inside is dedicated to Agni, the God of fire.

We capped the day's activities with a visit to the top of Mathanga hill. Climbing a steep flight of 600 steps which weave and wind their way between massive boulders and through caves was well worth the effort. The view from the summit, of the sunset flooding the ruins of Hampi with crimson light, offered an awesome vista.

Day 3 - Tour of the royal enclosure and more monoliths

Venturing deeper into Hampi ruins, we took in the magnificent 26 ft tall monolithic statue of Lakshmi Narasimha (the half-lion-half-man incarnation of Vishnu), seated atop the giant coils of the seven-headed serpent god Adishesha. Consecrated in 1528 on the orders of Krishnadevaraya, the sculpture originally depicted the divine consort Lakshmi seated on Narasimha's lap. It is popularly believed that the monolith was mutilated and the Lakshmi idol hacked to pieces by raiding armies. An idol of Lord Shiva, known as Badavalinga, is sited in the immediate vicinity. The 12 ft tall lingam carved out of shiny black granite rises out of a shallow pool of clear water.

Our next stop was to Hampi's most famous Vittala temple, 5 km by road or 3 km cross-country trek through rocky hillocks or by road. We opted for the latter, a decision which provided a memorable experience. En route were monuments far removed from the tourist circuit - Purandara Mantapa on the banks of river Tungabhadra; and the King's Balance where it is believed the Vijayanagar princes weighed gold and silver ornaments received as tribute from subordinate kingdoms.

The Vittala temple is perhaps the finest example of Vijayanagar architecture. Originally constructed by king Devaraya (1421-1440), it was further embellished during Krishnadevaraya's reign (1509-1529). The temple comprises an impressive rajagopura, a sabha mantapa (congregation hall), narasimha mantapa, kalyana mantapa (wedding hall), utsava mantapa (function hall) and several small devi shrines in the passageways. The pillars hewn out of single granite blocks with carved friezes, produce musical notes when tapped gently, prompting the mantapa to be christened the Hall of Musical Pillars.

Yet perhaps the most breathtaking structure in Hampi is the amazing Stone Chariot installed inside the Vitthala temple. This life-sized chariot carved out of stone and 22 ft tall, is testimony to the skills of the stone carvers of the Vijayanagar era. The intricately carved monolithic stone wheels of this chariot rotate on its axle with the precision and detailing of their sculptures inspiring awe.

A little distance away is the grand Hazara Rama temple, originally built by Vijayanagar kings for private worship. The temple which stands within a walled enclosure exudes an air of elegant serenity when the soft moonlight illuminates its beautiful friezes, even as its rock sculptures glisten in the rays of the morning sun. The relief sculptures on the walls and temples depict scenes from the epic Ramayana.

Our next stop was the Royal Enclosure, which contains the Lotus Mahal, elephant stables, Zenana enclosure, the Mahanavami Dibba and the stepped tank. The Zenana enclosure or the queens' quarters is an eclectic blend of Hindu and Islamic styles of architecture, surrounded on all sides by tall watchtowers - most of them in a state of ruin. The elegant Lotus Mahal appears suspended like a floating palace on a full moon night. Close by are the elephant stables, a majestic row of 11 domed stalls, with arched connecting doorways. One of the palaces here has been converted into a museum which displays an impressive collection of royal artefacts.

The enormous platform known as Mahanavami dibba with a floor area of 5,300 sq ft, served as a festivities viewing platform for kings, consorts and royal officers. About 30 ft above ground level, it is decorated with intricately carved horses, soldiers, a couple of foreign looking dignitaries, and a scene showing girls frolicking in water. The vantage view of the Tungabhadra as it silently winds its way through the rocky cliffs is enchanting. Another must-see monument here is the stepped tank, about three metres deep, into which water was fed by a series of stone channels, an example of expert engineering techniques developed several centuries ago.

Day 4 - Anegondi and return to Bangalore

On the last day of our excursion we set out early morning for Anegondi, 35 km by road, reluctantly refusing the option of crossing the river on coracles, plied by local fishermen. A proposed bridge to link these two villages has been stalled by Unesco because under the World Heritage Council rules, there should be no modern construction on heritage sites. Anegondi formed the northern outpost of the Vijayanagar Empire and its once mighty fort is now in ruins. The main landmarks of this village are the Ranganatha temple, Huchchappayana Matha, Pampa sarovara and Nava Vrundavana.

The sprawling Ranganatha temple is sited in the centre of Anegondi from which we visited the Pampa sarovara, a large water body set amid rocky hillocks. A short coracle ride ferried us to the Nava Vrundavana, a highly venerated temple housing nine shrines dedicated to Madhva seers (theerthas) - Padmanabha, Kavindra, Vageesha, Govinda-wadiyar, Vysaraya, Raghuvarya, Srinivasa, Rama and Sudhheendra - dating back to 12th-16th centuries.

Returning from Nava Vrundavana by coracle, the next stop was Anjanadri Hill, about 6 km from Anegondi. This rocky formation topped by a Hanuman temple, presents a striking visual when viewed from Hampi. Surprisingly the entire hill including the temple is being managed by self-styled ganja smoking, Hindi-speaking sadhus aka godmen who continuously recite verses from the Ramayana. The best feature of Anjanadri is the marvellous view it offers of the surrounding countryside. Amidst rugged cliffs, the mighty Tungabadhra flows calmly and gracefully offering fantastic sunset and sunrise vistas.

On the return journey back to Bangalore, the only stop en route was at the Tungabhadra Dam, Hospet, about 22 km from Hampi. It encloses waters spread over 400 sq km, making it the largest multi-purpose dam in Karnataka, generating 27 MW of electricity annually and also irrigating several thousand acres of land in Bellary, Raichur and Chitradurga districts. Recreation facilities in the form of fountains, beautiful walks, children play park, an aquarium and a musical fountain are also on offer.

Our four-day sojourn in the ancient ruins of Hampi made us aware that there's more to this world heritage site than is generally depicted and promoted. Though the ruins span only 26 sq. km, the list of monuments identified by ASI features over 121 temples and other monuments of which we had visited only a few. A good enough reason to revisit this psychologically uplifting seat of an ancient empire which is testimony to the architecture and town planning capabilities which we are heir to.

Getting there.

Hampi is sited in central Karnataka and is well connected by rail, road and air.

Rail. The nearest railhead is Hospet from where one has to travel another 15 km by road.

Road. Regular bus services are available from Bangalore to Hospet 15 km from Hampi.

Air. Bellary (74 km) is the nearest airport; other convenient airports are Belgaum (190 km) and Bangalore (353 km).

The best time to visit Hampi is from September to February. Summer months can be quite unpleasant with temperatures soaring above 380 C.

Accommodation

Hampi offers a few hotels with rudimentary facilities viz, Hotel Mayura Vijayanagar, Pampa Lodge, Naga Lodge among others priced in the range of Rs.60-150 per night.

Hospet has many hotels offering better facilities. Hotel Malligi (Rs 140-700 per night), Priyadarshini (Rs 140-500), among others.

Eating out in Hampi. Numerous small eateries and cafés line the road in the main bazaar area catering to every taste and season - South Indian, North Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, Italian - and include ice cream parlours, fresh fruit stalls etc. This is probably because every second traveller to Hampi is a foreigner.

Hampi Festival. Every year in November, the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) organises the grand Hampi Utsava to attract visitors to this far-flung locale. This year's festival is slated for November 3-5.

Tips to travellers

Heat. Hampi is a hot expanse. There is little shelter across its vast area except a few trees and the ruins themselves. Even in winter, afternoons are very hot. A water bottle, sun cap or umbrella is advisable paraphernalia while exploring Hampi.

The river. The Tungabhadra is treacherous and should be avoided except by good swimmers. Since the river flows through rocky and boulder-strewn terrain, judging the depth is difficult and underwater, the rocks are slippery.

Mexico Holidays - A Rejuvenating Excursion

By Alfie James

Mexico is one of the most admired places around the world. There are many individuals who have traveled to the Moon Palace and upon visiting the resort and the Cancun Mexico area fell in love with the idea of returning over and over again. As a result, they went on the timeshare tours and purchased a very expensive Moon Palace Resort Cancun Mexico timeshare.

These timeshare owners typically purchase 100 to 200 or more discounted weeks as a part of their timeshare packages. Even though they are able to pass these weeks down to their children and subsequently their grandchildren and so on, they will still have many weeks left over that their heirs, family or friends may never be able to use. The average American only vacations two weeks out of the year so if you calculate how long it will take to use 200 weeks, you can see that the Moon Palace Resort timeshare owner will have a few weeks left over to spare.

So how does this benefit you? If you are looking to travel to the Moon Palace Resort Cancun Mexico, you should be searching out the VIP members who want to sell their extra weeks to you. You can often times find them listing their deeply discounted weeks on Ebay or Vacation Rentals by Owner. If you do a Google search of VIP member Moon palace resort you should get over 150,000 returns on your search. They are out there and they hold the keys to providing you with a deeply discounted week to Moon Palace Resort in Cancun Mexico.

The Palace Resort timeshare owner can offer you their weeks in a number of ways. Each timeshare owner has to pay the all inclusive week when they travel to Cancun just like you would. The major difference is that they save $700-thousands of dollars per week over the retail cost that a non-member would pay. The timeshare owner of Moon Palace Resort Cancun Mexico will pay a different rate depending on the time of the year they want to travel and the accommodations they choose. For example, a week during the time period of January through March, the peak season for travel in Cancun, will be more expensive then a week from August to early December, the off season. The member still has to pay a base rate, but compared to what you would pay on your own, it is much less.

You will see auctions on Ebay that offer a trip to Moon Palace Resort Cancun Mexico for $139.00. That is not the actual cost for the trip itself but the auction fee that the timeshare member is charging you to use their timeshare week. Even with the auction fee not being refundable, you are still saving a great deal of money because you will be entitled to travel as that timeshare member's guest for the week. This will entitle you to save almost $100 per night off of the regular room rate, get free express check in service, get first choice of room views, ie. ocean view vs. garden view, get unlimited free tours to the best places in Cancun Mexico, get one free manicure, one free pedicure and one free massage per adult and many other discounts.

Before you travel to Moon Palace Resort Cancun Mexico, please take the suggestion to find a VIP member of Palace Resorts so as to give you and your family the ability to travel to one of the most beautiful resorts in all of Cancun Mexico at a tremendous discount with many other benefits as well.
